Mergem spre o lume a puterii gandului si a tehnologiei?

There are books that initially were thought for a specific area of activity or target group, but the ideas, values and concepts that those books transmit are sometimes valuable for more areas, and even sometimes could be marked as general truths.

From this category of books also could be mentioned “Positioning” wrote by Ries & Trout. Initially designed for marketing, advertising, communicators, PRs – me personally, although I am not one of those target group mentioned, took a lot of learning ideas and food for thought.

Here are some of the ideas why this book should be read:
-	The responsibility to the first – Who is the first man that flew over the Atlantic? – Lindbergh – Who is the second one? – Few people know; which is the highest mountain in the world? – Everest – Which is the second highest? – Few people know; who is the first man on the moon? – Armstrong – Who is the second one? – Few people know…

-	The over-communicating world – the 10 commandments have 300 words and are known by more than 1 billion of the world’s population; the law about the prices and quality of the sold cabbage in US is 26000 words and is known by maximum 10 people…

Wish you great reading…

Has started a new academic year in Republic of Moldova. Teachers will try to deliver relevant theory to educate skilled and valuable specialists and students will assimilate the valuable information without knowing how it can be used. Although academia provides young people with authentic sources to inform them, this environment does not exploit involving experiential education. More proactive youth have the opportunity to apply in practice some of their theoretical knowledge in some non-governmental organizations but can not use all his characteristic specialization skills as a professional. Requires action in a near real business.

For the first time in Moldova will take place Student Championship Management Business Arena. Is a unique project that offers students the opportunity to try there managerial powers to make decisions using the theoretical knowledge obtained in college. The project will be a month and half the students of economic faculties, divided into teams of five members each will coordinate an international company for a period of three virtual years . Ensuring fair competition will be by using online platform that enjoys success among corporate management consulting and organizational development worldwide. Participants will receive advice and feedback from trainers from the project but also special guests of consulting companies from our country. (Write here the name or not?)

The project is supported by Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Economy of Moldova. Business Arena is an appropriate opportunity for students who want a successful career and understand that this requires Theory + Practice + Action , so a multidimensional learning during college years. It is almost incredible that at the age of 20 to 24 years to coordinate an international company and Business Arena is a project that gives you this incredible opportunity.

Students wishing to participate in the tournament are invited to register on the site www.bizarena.org Until 1st of October, 2010.

This week several former soviet countries are celebrating their Independence Day, among them the 2 dearest to me – Moldova and Ukraine. A lot of articles are written these days about how the countries had developed for the last 18 – 20 years. What was good, what was bad, what could have been better…still majority of the articles are about politics, economy and social life, few are about education, about personal and professional development of the citizens, and what even fewer about the interconnections of the social elements: how politics influences economics, how economics influence social life, how education influences politics, economics and social life. As I really believe that when you take all the components and their interconnection you can make a true analysis.

One of the articles about the development of Ukraine somehow tries to do that and I recommend for you to read it when you have the time, here is the link: http://focus.in.ua/society/59015.

What I would like to speak about in this blog post is to try to answer the question: how education is influencing the country’s economic development? On the other hand economy is the engine of development of a modern country, so actually the question goes broader: how education is influencing country’s development?

Generally there are 3 big factors of education influence on the economical development of a country:
-	The quantity of education (coefficient of influence 34% of maximum 100%)*
-	The quality of education (coefficient of influence 41%)
-	The quantity and quality of education (coefficient of influence 48%)
*according to a 10 year study of the Research center of Colombia University

Now let’s take them one by one:
The first factor is quantity. This is characteristic to ex-soviet countries were education was mainly for free, and around 95% of young populations were graduates of basic schools and more than 80% of higher education. On the short term this system was showing good results after the Independence. Young people were high ranked on the international labor market and also internally economy was showing signs of development. On the long run though the system showed itself as rigid and not flexible. More and more students & companies today are saying that they are not going in the same direction.

The second factor is quality. This situation is characteristic to western cultures and countries: Great Britain, Belgium, and USA. The focus of the education system was on quality, in these countries it is really hard to get to higher education. High quality education actually has transformed here into a privileged attribute of life. From economic point of view it this strategy had a good impact, as important jobs were done by high skilled people, still socially the impact was not as great, as a lot of dramas are happening in the lives of young people that did not succeed to get to a good university.

The third factor is quantity and quality. This educational system is specific to Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland) and some Asian countries (Taiwan, Korea). In this countries % of people having free access to education is high and the quality is one of the best in the world. As a result for the past 10 years these countries are rated in top 10 places where the standards of living are highest.

But here is the paradox; it is connected to what I was saying earlier, that all the elements of the country’s system should be in synergetic development. In the top 30 countries of the world with best education: Finland, Korea, Japan, Sweden, Great Britain, Russia…these countries are also in top 30 of the other ranks: the countries with biggest suicidal rate; the countries with the unhappiest people. So great education that leads only to great economic results does not necessary leads to a happy nation.

From my point of view education should not be connected only to the economic growth, but to the life of the individual, because from 168 hours of the week only 40 hours we are spending at work…that is why the curricula’s should be more balanced…

The transition period has passed for the ex-soviet countries; it is time to stop blaming the “old regime” and start being a better nation and country – today. But we can only do that if all the country’s stakeholders unite together!

Was talking to a business trainer last week in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova and we touched several interesting points regarding the training participants of today, about the generation Y learners…what do they want, how do they learn, how they behave…I would like to share with you some of the key conclusions that we came to.

There are a lot of books written about the generations concept, about how differences between them influences the way business work. At the same time there is almost an equally number of books about the untrue understanding of the generation gaps and that it’s just an unproved marketing concept. Still there are several points that all books agree on, changes exists through time, just the way people understand them and apply them in their business strategies is different.

Majority of the specialized literature on the topic speaks about how generation Y is influencing the business from Marketing and strictly HR (motivation, workplace, and job assignment) point of view. Very little is written about how this new generation is shaping the learning and development in the business world.
First of all in order to be on the same page, let’s see what is the general agreed information about the generation Y. This generation is defined as the children of Baby Boomer generation, followers of the generation X and they were born between in the approximate period 1980 – 1993.

They are mobile (working at home, in the office, business trips is something that does not scare them); they are the communication generation (3 G, mobile, sms, chat, internet, intranet, social networks, mails, if they can use all of them in work is great for them); they are flexible (routine is their worst enemy); they are inpatient (the sooner they get what they want the sooner they can move to new goals) and the last but very important is that they want impact (they want to make a difference, they want to be relevant, they want to be praised).

Can the standard great old fashion training respond to the needs of this generation? From my point of view – no it can’t, and here are some of my thoughts of what kind of adjustment trainers should do in their job to respond better to the new business generation:

Adjustment 1: The speed of learning – immediacy
As speed of learning I am referring to the number of days, hours, minutes invested in learning, that should be reduced, but not only…trainers should also increase the speed of learning content itself, as under-30 generation is processing the information quickly (this ability was developed in them because of the information boom of the past years). Faster delivery, less time for solving training tasks and cases, quicker getting to results and debrief of the results.

Adjustment 2: A picture says a thousand words – technology
Since childhood, generation Y was in front of the tv, they are the first one that grew on computer games, they constantly were exposed to expressive graphics and colours. Even the books that they were using in schools were different, with more pictures and more dynamic. So training for them should contain a combination of traditional instruments (flipcharts, whiteboards) with new training technologies (beamer, mobile phones, and computers).

Adjustment 3: Quick moves rather than advanced planning – multitasking
“Generation Y grew up doing homework while watching TV and doing almost everything while wearing a Walkman. Many of them feel much more comfortable than their predecessors doing more than one thing at once. “(Marc Prensky, “Reaching younger workers who think differently”, 1998). As written earlier, routine is this generation’s worst enemy. That is why trainers should rethink the way they are building the learning process, as simulations, business cases, parallel games, increased dynamics should be part of any training now.

I am a part of this generation myself, and I also can say from my experience as a trainer that people from generation Y are very challenging, but at the same time they are very eager to learn. One thing is for sure – a well prepared training, with the necessary adjustments will be exactly what this generation needs.

My inspirations for this article: Marc Prensky, Wikipedia, Nancy Ahlrichs and my friends from the training world.

Yesterday I was evaluating the sales meetings that I had in June and an interesting fact attracted my attention – majority of my meeting were about the weakness of employees.

Usually during a sales meeting I am writing the questions that arise and the issues that are discussed in order to develop the educational program that really fits the needs of the company. So I was going through all the questions and topics and the word “weaknesses” was keep popping up all the time.

I was talking about my discovery with my colleagues and also with some of my fellow trainers, it is a fact – majority of the meetings between a training company and a potential client are like a doctor consultancy: what hurts your company?

But at the same time analyzing the answer to the question i am putting at each meeting “how do you measure, track, capitalize on the developed knowledge, skill or competency?” were quite vague. This is usually what happen, we identify that there are gaps in our employees, we do a training to fill the gap, then we continue to assess new needs and new gaps, considering that previous filled gap is somehow performing on its own!?.

In 2004 Gallup made a research on “how do people use their strengths at work?”. They had over 900 000 interviews, in over 20 countries and the results were quite astonishing: only 20% of the interviewed said they are using 100% of their strengths at work, and only 18% actually know what are their strengths actually.

The main conclusion that we can drag out of this research is actually a question that all HR Managers and trainers should put to themselves: how would a company perform if its employees would know their strengths and use them for 100%?

How many trainings or long-term educational programs you see today that would sound like this: “You are great in sales, negotiations and persuasion? Let’s keep the level of the skill at a high level and let’s make it more effective”! Well…sincerely speaking… I did not see many…but corporate education should also do this. Development is not only about identifying and healing the weak points, it is also about constant shaping the strengths and using them.

I quite often during the sales meeting use the example of football. High performing teams are those that use the strengths of the players, not focusing on the weaknesses. The player of the year 2009 – Lionel Messi, is short, he cannot shoot with the right leg and he loses majority of the 1-to-1 physical contacts on the field.

But he became the best player, because his coach knew how to use his strengths: speed, agility, vision of play and transform strength in performance and results.
Yes, weak points of the employees should be identified and trained, but what is more important is how to transform the weak point into strength, and how afterwards to really capitalize on it.

How many of you have never heard of “being proactive”?, of really taking responsibility and action in your life. Many say that the word “proactive” came from Covey, maybe it is so, but the meaning of it can be found from old AyurVedic writings till the latest self-motivating books.

I strongly connect to this saying and this is actually one of my guiding principles in life.
Still at least 2 times today I was facing the situation when people took responsibility and proactivity in their life, and done it wrong and with damage for the business!

Is proactivity from employees bad for a manager?

I was watching “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” yesterday and this questions pumped into my mind: do we have a chance for a second chance? The thing is that I was not really fond of Penelope Cruz at the beginning, even if I maybe liked the way she was acting, I was kind of influenced by the news at those times, that she had broke up the Hollywood most beloved couple – Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman…and that they have 2 children and everything…
Well sure this ideas were reinforced by the fact that my parents were divorced, and I kind of know the feeling that sucks.
But I must say now I am very fond of her. I love the way she acts, in majority of the films…her Spanish accent is astonishing and I feel that she loves what she is doing and she has passion for acting.
So do we have a chance for a second chance? The answer would be yes! Especially if the first opinion was created from outside and not from inside.

Here is the best 20 guru of management and leadership of today….and the criteria of their selection. Two things pumped into my mind:
- There is no word about people & human & individual, which is really weird as no leadership of any organization would be possible without personal leadership…
- Also I have the impression that all of them are great for big companies, but 95% of the companies in the world are not big.
Any case, here they are…

The gurus who make our Excellence 100 list today possess a rare combination of traits and abilities. Here are the eight criteria:
1. Preparation: academic and professional.
2. Character: values, ethics, beliefs, purpose, mission, integrity, walk the talk.
3. Principles: big message, point of view, tenets, main points.
4. Personality: charisma, style, originality, authenticity, one of a kind.
5. Performance: inspiring action, real-world performance, work ethic.
6. Experience: beyond local and regional, more national and international.
7. Expression: substance and style in writing, speaking, coaching, consulting, mentoring, training.
8. Influence: difference, results, change, transformation.
